Lā ilāha illā-llahu wadahū lā sharīka lah, lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-amd, yuyī wa yumīt, wa Huwa ayyun lā yamūt, bi yadihi-l-khayr, wa Huwa ʿalā kulli shayin Qadīr.

There is no god but Allah. He is Alone and He has no partner. To Him Alone belong all sovereignty and all praise. He gives life and He gives death. He is Ever-Living and does not die. In His Hand is all good and He is over all things All-Powerful.

The Messenger of Allah said: Whoever says [the above] in the marketplace, Allah shall record a million good deeds for him, wipe a million evil deeds away from him, and raise a million ranks for him.” (Tirmidhī 3429)

Allāhumma-k-finī bi-alālika ʿan arāmik, wa aghninī bi-falika ʿamman siwāk.

O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful against Your prohibited, and make me independent of all those besides You.

ʿAlī (raiy Allāhu anhu) narrated that a slave who was buying his freedom came to him and said: “I am unable to pay the price for my freedom, so help me.” He said: “Shall I not teach you words that the Messenger of Allah taught me? Were your debts like mountains, Allah would settle them for you. Say: [the above].” (Tirmidhī 3563)

When Burdened by Debts #2

Allāhumma Rabb-as-samāwāti wa Rabba-l-ari wa Rabba-l-ʿArshi-l-ʿaīm, Rabbanā wa Rabba kulli shay, fāliqa-l-abbi wa-n-nawā, wa munzila-t-tawrāti wa-l-injīli wa-l-furqān, aʿūdhu bika min sharri kulli shayin Anta ākhidhun bi-nāiyatih, Allāhumma Anta-l-Awwalu fa-laysa qablaka shay’, wa Anta-l-Ākhiru fa-laysa baʿdaka shay, wa Anta--āhiru fa-laysa fawqaka shay, wa Anta-l-Bāinu fa-laysa dūnaka shay, iqi ʿanna-d-dayna wa aghninā mina-l-faqr.

O Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, Lord of the Magnificent Throne, our Lord and Lord of all things, Splitter of the seed and the date stone, the One who revealed the Torah, the Injeel and the Criterion (Qur’ān); I seek Your protection from the evil of every thing You hold by the forehead (i.e. fully control). You are the First and there is nothing before You. You are the Last and there is nothing after You. You are the Most High and there is nothing above You. You are the Most Near and there is nothing closer than You. Pay the debts on our behalf and relieve us from poverty.

Suhayl reports that Abū Sāli would command us: If one of you intends to go sleep, he should lie on his right side and say [the above]. Abū Sali would narrate this from Abū Hurayrah (raiy Allāhu anhu) who narrated it from the Prophet . (Muslim 2713)

When Burdened by Debts #3

Allāhumma Mālikal-mulk, tu’ti-l-mulka man tashā’, wa tanziʿu-l-mulka mim-man tashā’, wa tuʿizzu man tashā’, wa tudhillu man tashā’, bi-yadika-l-khayr, innaka ʿalā kulli shayin Qadīr. Ramāna-d-dunyā wa-l-ākhirah wa Raīmahumā, tuʿṭīhimā man tashā’, wa tamnaʿu minhumā man tashā’, iramnī ramatan tughnīnī bihā ʿar-ramati man siwāk.

O Allah, Lord of the kingdom, You grant kingdom to whoever you will, and You take kingdom away from whoever You will. You honour whoever You will and You disgrace whoever You will. All good is in Your hands. You are All-Powerful over everything. (O) the Extremely Merciful and the Especially Merciful in this world and the hereafter; You give from them (this world and the hereafter) whomsoever You will and You withhold from them whomsoever You will. Have mercy on me which will leave me free of the mercy of those other than You.

Anas b. Mālik (raiy Allāhu anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah said to Muʿādh: Shall I not teach you such a duʿā that if you had debt equal to Mount Uhud, Allah will pay it off for you. Say O Muʿādh: [the above].” (abarānī in Muʿjam al-Saghīr 558)

When Burdened by Debts #4

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min-l-hammi wa-l-azan, wa aʿūdhu bika min-l-ʿajzi wa-l-kasal, wa aʿūdhu bika min-l-jubni wa-l-bukhl, wa aʿūdhu bika min ghalabati-d-dayni wa qahri-r-rijāl.

O Allah, I seek Your protection from anxiety and grief. I seek Your protection from inability and laziness. I seek Your protection from cowardice and miserliness, and I seek Your protection from being overcome by debt and being overpowered by men.

Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (raiy Allāhu ʿanhu) narrated that one day, the Messenger of Allah entered the masjid. He saw a man from the Anār called Abū Umāmah (raiy Allāhu ʿanhu). He asked, What is the matter? Why are you sitting in the mosque when it is not the time for prayer? He replied, Never-ending worries and debts, O Messenger of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah then asked, Shall I not teach you words by which, when you say them, Allah will remove your worries, and settle your debts? He replied, Yes of course, O Messenger of Allah. He said, Say in the morning and evening [the above].” Abū Umāmah (raiy Allāhu ʿanhu) said, Then I did that, and Allah removed my worries and settled my debts.” (Abū Dāwūd 1555)

Supplication of the Borrower at the Time of Repayment

Bāraka-llāhu laka fi ahlika wa mālik.

May Allah bless you in your family and wealth.

ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Rabīʿah (raiy Allāhu anhu) related: The Prophet borrowed forty thousand (dirhams) from me. When some wealth came to him, he paid me back and said [the above].” (Ibn Mājah 2424)

Allāhumma innī as’aluka ʿilma-n-nāfiʿā, wa rizqan ayyibā, wa ʿamalam-mutaqabbalā.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, wholesome sustenance, and deeds which are accepted.

Umm Salamah (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhā) narrated that when the Prophet performed the Fajr salāh, he would say [the above], while he said the salām. (Ibn Mājah 925)

For Abundance of Wealth #2

Allāhumma ghfir lī wa-hdinī wa-rzuqnī wa āfinī, aʿūdhu bi-llāhi min īqi-l-maqāmi yawma-l-qiyāmah.

O Allah, forgive me, guide me, grant me sustenance and wellbeing. I seek your protection from the anguish of standing on the Day of Judgement.

ʿĀsim b. umayd said, I asked ʿĀ’ishah (raḍiy Allāhu anhā) about what the Messenger of Allah used to start his night prayer with. She said, “You have indeed asked me something which no one before you has asked me. The Messenger of Allah used to say [the above]” (Nasā’ī 1617).

For Abundance of Wealth #3

Allāhumma innī as’aluka min fadlika wa rahmatik, fa-innahū lā yamlikuhā illā Ant.

O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty and mercy, as no one has power over it except You.

ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿud (raiy Allāhu ʿanhu) narrated that the Prophet hosted a guest so he sent a request for food from his wives but it was not found by any of them. So he said [the above]. He was then gifted a roasted lamb. He said, This is from the bounty of Allah and we await His Mercy. (Tabarāni in Mu’jam al-Kabir 10379)
