Allāhumma laka-l-amdu Anta Nūru-s-samāwāti wa-l-ari wa man fīhinn, wa laka-l-amdu Anta Qayyimu-s-samāwāti wa-l-ari wa man fīhinn, wa laka-l-amd, Anta-l-aqq wa waʿduka aqq, wa qawluka aqq, wa liqā’uka aqq, wal-jannatu aqq, wa-n-nāru aqq, wa-s-sāʿatu aqq, wa-n-nabiyyūna aqq, wa muammadun aqq, Allāhumma laka aslamtu wa ʿalayka tawakkaltu wa bika āmantu, wa ilayka anabtu, wa bika khaamtu, wa ilayka ākamtu.

O Allah, for You Alone is all praise; You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and whatever is therein. For You Alone is all praise; You are the Maintainer of the heavens and the earth and whatever is therein. And for You Alone is all praise; You are the Truth. Your promise is the truth, Your speech is the truth, the meeting with You is the truth, Paradise is the truth, Hell-Fire is the truth, the Final Hour is the truth, the Prophets are the truth and Muhammad is the truth. O Allah, I surrender myself to You Alone, I put my trust in You Alone, I believe in You Alone, I turn to You Alone, I complain of my opponents to You Alone and I refer judgement to You Alone.

The Prophet’s Praises at Uhud

(1x)

Allāhumma lakal-amdu kulluh, Allāhumma lā qābia limā basata, wa lā bāsia limā qabata, wa lā hādiya liman alalta, wa lā muilla liman hadayta, wa lā muʿtiya limā manʿata, wa lā māniʿa limā aʿṭayta, wa lā muqarriba limā bāʿadta, wa lā mubāʿida limā qarrabta.

O Allah, for You Alone is all praise. O Allah, none can restrict what You expand and none can expand what You have restricted. None can guide whom You have left astray, and none can mislead whom You have guided. None can give what You withhold, and none can withhold what You bestow. None can bring near what You have distanced and none can distance what You have brought near.

Rifā’ah az-Zuraqī (raiy Allāhu anhu) narrates: When it was the day of (the battle of) Uhud and the polytheists retreated, the Messenger of Allah  said: ‘Arrange yourselves (in rows) so I can praise my Lord.’ So the Companions (radiy Allāhū ‘anhum) stood behind him in rows. Then the Messenger of Allah  said [the above].” (Amad 15066)

Praising Allah with His Names

(1x)

Allāhumma Rabb-as-samāwāti wa Rabba-l-ʿArshi-l-ʿaīm, Rabbanā wa Rabba kulli shay, fāliqa-l-abbi wa-n-nawā, wa munzila-t-tawrāti wa-l-injīli wa-l-furqān, aʿūdhu bika min sharri kulli shayin Anta ākhidhun bi-nāiyatih, Allāhumma Anta-l-Awwalu fa-laysa qablaka shay, wa Anta-l-Ākhiru fa-laysa baʿdaka shay, wa Anta--āhiru fa-laysa fawqaka shay, wa Anta-l-Bāinu fa-laysa dūnaka shay.

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens, Lord of the earth, Lord of the Magnificent Throne, our Lord and Lord of all things, Splitter of the seed and the date stone, the One who revealed the Torah, the Bible and the Criterion (Qur’ān); I seek Your protection from the evil of every thing You hold by the forehead (i.e. fully control). You are the First and there is nothing before You. You are the Last and there is nothing after You. You are the Most High and there is nothing above You. You are the Most Near and there is nothing closer than You.

Suhayl reports that Abū āli would command us: If one of you intends to go sleep, he should lie on his right side and say [the above].

Abū āli would narrate this from Abū Hurayrah (raiy Allāhu anhu) who narrated it from the Prophet . (Muslim 2713)

The Greatest Truth

(1x)

Allāhumma Rabbanā lakal- amdu mila-s-samāwāti wa milal- ari wa mila mā shita min shayin baʿd, ahla-t-thanāi wal-majd, aaqqu mā qālal-ʿabdu wa kullunā laka ʿabd lā māniʿa li-mā aʿṭayta, wa lā muʿṭiya li-mā manaʿt, wa lā yanfaʿu dha-l-jaddi minka-l-jadd.

O Allah, Our Lord, to You Alone belongs all praise; praise which fills the heavens and the earth and which fills whatever You wish after that. You are Most worthy of praise and glory. The greatest truth the slave can utter is – and we are all Your slaves – there is none who can withhold what You give, and none can give what You withhold; and the wealth of the wealthy does not avail him from You.

Abu Sa’id Khurī (raiy Allāhu anhu) narrates: The Messenger of Allah would say [the above] after saying (May Allah respond to the one who praises Him).” (Abū Dāwūd 847)

Praise Allah with Expressing Your Dire Need of Him

(1x)

Alamdu-lillāhi Rabbi-l-ʿālamīn, ar-Ramāni-r-Raīm, Māliki yawmi-d-dīn, lā ilāha illā Anta tafʿalu mā turīd, Allāhumma Anta-llāhu lā ilāha illā Ant. Antal-Ghanniyu wa nanu-l-fuqarā’.

All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds, the All Merciful, the Very Merciful, Master of the Day of Judgement. There is no god worthy of worship except You, You do what You will. O Allah, You are Allah, there is no god worthy of worship except You. You are the Rich and Free of all needs whilst we are poor and in need of You.

ʿĀ’isha (raiy Allāhu anhā) narrates: The people complained to the Messenger of Allah of a drought. So he ordered for a pulpit and it was placed in his place of prayer. He then arranged a day for all the people to gather.

ʿĀ’isha says (raiy Allāhu anhā): The Messenger of Allah came out when the disk of the sun appeared. He sat on the pulpit and praised Allah and then said: “You have complained regarding the drought of your gardens and lack of rain for some time. Verily, Allah has commanded you to ask Him and promised to answer your prayers, then he said [the above with the addition of] “Send down rain upon us, and make what you send effective and far-reaching until some time.”

Then he lifted his arms until we saw the whiteness under his armpit. He then turned his back towards the people and turned round his upper garment while his hands were raised. He then turned to the people and descended the pulpit. He performed two units of Salah. Allah then formed a cloud. There was a clap of thunder and a flash of lightening and it rained with the permission of Allah. He did not stay inside the Masjid until there were streams of water running.

When the Messenger of Allah saw wetness on the peoples clothes, he smiled until his front teeth became visible. He then said: I bear witness that Allah is over all things All-Powerful and I am the servant and Messenger of Allah.” (Ibn ibbān 991)

Praise Allah with the Praises of the Entire Creation

All praise is for Allah who has sufficed me and given me refuge. All praise is for Allah who has fed me and given me drink. All praise is for Allah who has been gracious to me and showered favours on me. O Allah, I ask You by Your glory to save me from the Hell-Fire.

The Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever says [the above] when retiring to bed has praised Allah with all the praises of His entire creation.” (Hākim 2001)

Praise Allah for All His Favours

(1x)

Al-amdu lillāhi-lladhī yuṭʿiumu wa lā yuṭʿam, manna ʿalaynā fa-hadānā wa aṭʿamanā wa saqānā, wa kulla balā’in asanin ablānā, al-amdu lillāhi ghayra muwaddaʿin wa lā mukāfaiw-wa lā makfūrin wa lā mustaghnan ʿanh, al-amdu lillāhi-lladhī aṭʿama mina--aʿām, wa saqā mina-sh-sharāb, wa kasā minal-ʿurā, wa hadā mina--alālah, wa baṣṣara mina-l-ʿamā, wa faḍḍala ʿalā kathīrim-min-khalqihī tafīlā, alamdu-lillāhi Rabbi-l-ʿālamīn.

All praise is for Allah who feeds and is not fed. He favoured us, and thus guided us, blessed us with food and drink, and bestowed upon us every favour. All praise is for Allah, a praise which we will never bid farewell to, a never-ending praise, an accepted praise and an indispensable praise. All praise is for Allah who provided food and drink; who clothed us, guided us from error, removed our blindness and favoured us greatly over many of His creation. All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds.

All praise is for Allah; praise which is abundant, pure, blessed and perpetual, as our Lord loves and is pleased with.

Rifa’ah b. Rafi (raiy Allāhu ‘anhu) said: “I prayed behind the Prophet and I sneezed and said: [the above]. When the Messenger of Allah  finished praying, he turned and asked: ‘Who is the one who spoke during the prayer?’ But no one said anything. Then he said it a second time: ‘Who is the one who spoke during the prayer?’ So Rifaʿah b. Rafiʿ b. ʿAfrah said: It was me, O Messenger of Allah. He said: I said: [the above] The Prophet said: ‘By the One in Whose hand is my soul, thirty-odd angels hastened to see which of them would take it up.’” (Nasā’ī 931)

Praises Which the Angels Race to Take Up #2

(1x)

Al-amdu lillāhi amdan kathīran ayyiba-m-mubārakan fīhi mubārakan ʿalayh, kamā yuibbu Rabbunā wa yarā ay-yumada wa yanbaghī lah.

All praise is for Allah; praise which is abundant, pure, blessed and perpetual, as our Lord loves to be praised and is appropiate for Him.

Anas b. Malik (raiy Allāhu anhu) said: I was sitting with the Prophet in a gathering when a man came and greeted the Prophet saying:’Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah.’ The Prophet replied: ‘Wa alaykumus salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh’. When the man sat, he said [the above]. The Prophet asked: ‘What did you say?’ He then repeated what he said. The Prophet said: ‘By the One in Whose hand is my soul, ten angels hastened in eagerness to write it (its reward). But they did not know how to write it until they took it up to the All Mighty. Then He said: ‘Write it as my servant said it.’” (Nasai in Sunan al-Kubra 7718, Ahmad 12612)

Abū Umāmah Bahilī (raiy Allāhu anhu) says that the Messenger of Allah passed by him while he was moving his lips, so he asked: “What are you saying O Abū Umāmah?” He replied: “I am remembering my Lord.” He said: “Shall I not inform you of the most virtuous dhikr for the night and day? It is that you say [the above].” (Composite: Amad 22198 and Ibn ibbān 830)

Exalt Allah

Subānaka-llāhumma wa bi-amdik, wa tabāraka-smuk, wa taʿālā jadduka wa lā ilāha ghayruk.

How perfect are You O Allah, and all praise is Yours. Your name is most blessed, Your majesty is exalted and there is no god worthy of worship except You.

Abū Saʿīd Khurī (raiy Allāhu anhu) narrated: “When the Messenger of Allah got up to pray at night (for tahajjud prayer) he uttered the takbīr (الله أكبر) and then said: “[the above]”. He then said: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ (There is no god but Allah) three times; and: (Allah is altogether great) three times. (I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing and All-Knowing from the accursed devil, from his evil whisper, from his blowing, and from his spitting.” He then recited (the Qur’an). (Abū Dāwūd 775)

Praises Beloved to The Most Merciful

(1x)

Subāna-llāhi wa bi amdih, subāna-llāhil-ʿAīm.

Allah is free from imperfection and all praise is for Him. Allah, the Magnificent, is free from imperfection.

The Messenger of Allah said: “There are two statements that are light on the tongue, heavy on the Scale and are beloved to the Most Merciful: سُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ ، سُبْحَانَ اللهِ الْعَظِيْم.” (Bukhārī 6682, Muslim 2694)

4 Phrases That Outweigh All Other Dhikr

(1x)

Subāna-llāhi wa bi amdih, ʿadada khalqih, wa riā nafsih, wa zinata ʿarshih, wa midāda kalimātih.

Allah is free from imperfection and all praise is for Him, (in ways) as numerous as all He has created, (as vast) as His pleasure, (as limitless) as the weight of His Throne, and (as endless) as the ink of His words. (Muslim)

Juwayriyah bint al-Hārith (raiy Allāhu anhā) reported: The Prophet left (my home) in the morning as I was busy in performing the dawn prayer. He came back in the forenoon and found me sitting there. He asked: ‘Are you still in the same position as I left you?’ I replied in the affirmative. Thereupon the Prophet said: ‘I recited four phrases three times after I left you. If everything that you have said today was put in the scales, [the above] would outweigh it.’” (Muslim 2140, Abū Dāwūd 1503)

Magnify Your Lord

Subāna Dhil-jabarūti wal-malakūt, wal-kibriyā’i wal-ʿaamah.

How free from imperfection is the Owner of might, dominion, magnificence and greatness. (Nasā’ī)

‘Awf b. Mālik (raiy Allāhu anhu) narrates: I stood with the Prophet . He started by using the siwāk and performing wuu, then he stood and prayed. He started reciting Al-Baqarah and he did not come to any verse that spoke of mercy but he paused and asked for mercy, and he did not come to any verse that spoke of punishment but he paused (and sought refuge with Allah from that). Then he bowed and he stayed bowing for as long as he had stood, and he said while bowing: [the above] Then he prostrated for as long as he had bowed, saying while prostrating: [the above]. Then he recited Āl Imrān, then another surah and another, doing that each time.” (Nasā’ī 1132)

Allāhu akbaru kabīrā, wal-amdu lillāhi kathīrā, wa subāna-llāhi bukrata-w-wa aīlā.

Allah is truly the Greatest. Praise be to Allah in abundance. Glory be to Allah in the morning and the evening.

Ibn ‘Umar (radiy Allāhū ‘anhumā) narrates: “While we performing salah with the Messenger of Allah (), someone from among us said: [the above] The Messenger of Allah said: Who uttered such and such a word? A person among the people said: It was me (who recited these words), Messenger of Allah. He said: “It (its utterance) surprised me, for the doors of heaven were opened for It.” Ibn ‘Umar (radiy Allāhū ‘anhumā) said: “I have not abandoned them (these words) since I heard the Messenger of Allah saying this.” (Muslim 601)

Praise Allah with His Oneness

Ubadah b. Samit (raiy Allāhu anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever wakes up in the night and says: [the above], then he supplicates (O Lord, forgive me), he will be forgiven.’” Walid said: “Or he said: then if he supplicates, it will be answered then if he stood up and performed wudhu and then performed salah, his prayer would be accepted.”(Ibn Mājah 3878)

Praises Which Free You From the Hell-fire

(1x)

Allāhumma innī ush-hiduka, wa ush-hidu malā’ikataka wa amlata ʿarshik, wa ush-hidu man fi-s-samāwāti wa man fil-ari an-naka Anta-llāhu lā ilāha illā Anta wadak, lā sharīka lak, wa ash-hadu an-na Muammadan ʿabduka wa rasūluk.

O Allah, I call upon You, Your angels, the bearers of Your Throne, and all those in the heavens and the earth to bear witness that surely You are Allah. There is no god but You Alone. You have no partner whatsoever, and I bear witness that Muhammad is Your slave and Your Messenger.

The Messenger of Allah said: “Whosoever reads [the above] once, Allah frees a quarter of him from the Hell-fire. Whosever reads it twice, Allah frees two-thirds of him from the Hell-fire. And whosoever reads it thrice, Allah frees him completely from the Hell-fire.” (Hākim 1920)

Affirming Your Inability to Praise Allah Sufficiently

(1x)

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bi-riāka min sakhatik, wa bi-muʿāfātika min ʿuqūbatik, wa aʿūdhu bika minka, lā uḥṣī thanā’an ʿalayk, Anta kamā athnayta ʿalā nafsik.

O Allah, I seek protection in Your pleasure from Your anger, and in Your forgiveness from Your punishment. I seek protection from You through You. I cannot enumerate Your praise. You are as You have praised Yourself.

Alī b. Abī ālib (raiy Allāhu anhu) narrates: The Messenger of Allah used to say [the above] at the end of his witr Salah.” (Abū Dāwūd 1427, Tirmidhi 3566, Ibn Majah 1179) In another narration, it is narrated from Aisha (raiy Allāhu anhā): I noticed that the Messenger of Allah was missing from his bed one night, so I went looking for him, and my hand touched the soles of his feet while he was prostrating with his feet upright. He was saying: [the above without the word إِنِّيْ].” (Muslim 486)

Praise Allah For His Dominion

(1x)

Allāhumma Mālikal-mulk, tu’ti-l-mulka man tashā’, wa tanziʿu-l-mulka mim-man tashā’, wa tuʿizzu man tashā’, wa tudhillu man tashā’, bi-yadika-l-khayr, innaka ʿalā kulli shayin Qadīr. Ramāna-d-dunyā wa-l-ākhirah wa Raīmahumā, tuʿṭīhimā man tashā’, wa tamnaʿu minhumā man tashā’, iramnī ramatan tughnīnī bihā ʿar-ramati man siwāk.

O Allah, Lord of the kingdom, You grant kingdom to whoever you will, and You take kingdom away from whoever You will. You honour whoever You will and You disgrace whoever You will. All good is in Your hands. You are All-Powerful over everything. (O) the Extremely Merciful and the Especially Merciful in this world and the hereafter; You give from them (this world and the hereafter) whomsoever You will and You withhold from them whomsoever You will. Have mercy on me which will leave me free of the mercy of those other than You.

Ask Allah with His Greatest Name #1

(1x)

Allāhumma innī as’aluka bi-annī ash-hadu an-naka Anta-llāhu lā ilāha illā Anta-l-Aadu--amad, al-ladhī lam yalid, wa lam yūlad, wa lam yakul-lahū kufuwan aad.

O Allah, I beg You as I bear witness that You are Allah, there is no god worthy of worship except You, the One, the Self-Sufficient Master, who has not given birth and was not born, and to whom none is equal.

Buraydah (raiy Allāhu anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allah heard a man saying [the above]. The Messenger of Allah remarked: “By the One in Whose Hand is my life, He has certainly asked Allah with His Greatest Name; when He is supplicated by it, He responds, and when asked, He gives.” (Tirmidhī 3475)

Ask Allah with His Greatest Name #2

O Allah, I beg You as all praise only belongs to You. There is no god worthy of worship except You, the Giver of all good, the Originator of the heavens and the earth. O Lord of Majesty and Honour, O the Ever Living, O the One who sustains and protects all that exists.

Anas ibn Mālik (raiy Allāhu anhu) narrates that I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah and a man was offering salāh. The man then said [the above]. The Messenger of Allah remarked: “He has certainly asked Allah with His Greatest Name; when He is supplicated by it, He responds, and when asked, He gives.” (Abū Dāwūd 1495)
